The DSL brand began as a sub-brand of Diesel and, after five years, started its own independent business in Balerna, Switzerland.

Established by the Tabacchi family in 1934, Safilo manufactures and distributes eyeglass frames, sport goggles and sunglasses, selling its products in sporting goods stores and through opticians under their own Carrera and Smith brands and more than twenty licensed names including Giorgio Armani, Gucci, Kate Spade, Liz Claiborne and Hugo Boss.
