Nike, Inc., headquartered in Beaverton, Oregon, is the world's foremost manufacturer of athletic shoes and apparel.  

Nike was founded in 1971 by Phil Knight and William J. Bowerman, taking the company's name from the Greek goddess of victory, Nike.  Knight managed the business part of the company and Bowerman took care of designing improvements in athletic footwear.
