Maui Jim began offering their sunglasses exclusively to residents of Hawaii in the early eighties.  The first sunglasses made were no match for Hawaii's harsh sunlight and glare so the company set out to create sunglasses that would eliminate the glare without sacrificing the beautiful colors and the island landscape.

Initially, there were seven sunglass styles available using the PolarizedPlus technology.  They now offer over fifty styles and one-hundred SKUs and are the fastest growing polarized sunglass manufacturer in the world.

Rather than being worn by celebrities or movie stars, Maui Jim Sunglasses are generally suitable for athletes.  Some professional athletes that have been seen sporting Maui Jim Sunglasses soccer superstar Wayne Rooney and New York Yankees star Derek Jeter.    

The company was purchased in 1991 by Hester Enterprises, and in 1994 Hester enlisted RLI Vision Corporation of Peoria, Illinois to be the mainland distributor of Maui Jim Sunglasses for the ophthalmic market.  Maui Jim, Inc. was established in 1996 when Maui Jim Sunglasses acquired RLI Vision.
