Monthly disposable contact lenses were approved for use in 2001.  Patients are able to wear monthly disposable lenses continuously for thirty days.

Made from super-permeable silicone hydrogel materials, monthly disposable contact lenses are designed to let in a much higher level of oxygen to the cornea daily disposable contacts.  An extended wear lens such as CIBA Vision’s Focus Night & Day allows six times the amount of oxygen than does most other disposable contacts.

Many users of monthly disposable contact lenses wear them as alternatives to laser vision correction, either because they cannot afford it or because they feel uncomfortable undergoing a surgical procedure or they are a poor candidate for the surgery.
